A person has a healthy bite when their upper teeth meet in front of their lower teeth on both sides of the mouth. An abnormal bite, or malocclusion, is a misalignment of teeth and/or an incorrect meeting of the upper and lower teeth.

Many people have some type of malocclusion, although many don’t need orthodontic treatment. People with more severe malocclusions may need orthodontic and sometimes surgical treatment to fix the problem. Correction of malocclusion may reduce your risk of tooth decay and help relieve excessive pressure on the jaw. Orthodontic treatment also is used to align the teeth and create a better smile.
