Making decisions about your child’s orthodontic treatment

How do I know if my child needs orthodontic treatment? At what age should my child first see an orthodontist? Can I wait on Phase I/Interceptive Orthodontic Treatment until my child is older?

Q: How do I know if my child needs orthodontic treatment?

A: It’s hard to tell on your own whether your child needs orthodontic treatment. Even when your child’s teeth look straight, there may be other problems. Your family dentist can help give you more information, but an orthodontist is your best resource. An initial exam is complimentary. Dr. Dworkin would be happy to examine your child and recommend for or against treatment.

Q: At what age should my child first see an orthodontist?

A: The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children should be evaluated by an orthodontist by age seven. This can help to prevent more difficult treatment later in life.

Q: Can I wait on Phase I/Interceptive Orthodontic Treatment until my child is older?

A: This is not recommended. Children who need Phase I treatment often have more complicated problems that need immediate treatment. Treatment options for your child will become more limited and more difficult if treatment is delayed. Delaying treatment may mean that your child may need to have teeth pulled or oral surgery later in life, and you may have to pay more for treatment.
