What are the early symptoms of orthodontic problems? Will orthodontic treatment hurt? Is orthodontic treatment expensive? What is the cause of orthodontic problems? Will I need to have any teeth removed? Can I still have braces if I have missing teeth? Will braces leave marks on my teeth?  Can you be too old for braces?
Q: What are the early symptoms of orthodontic problems?

A: It’s hard to tell on your own whether you or your child needs orthodontic treatment. Even when teeth look straight, there may be other problems. Also, in some children, crooked teeth will eventually become more straight without orthodontic treatment. Your family dentist can help give you more information, but an orthodontist is your best resource. An initial exam is complimentary. Dr. Dworkin would be happy to examine you or your child and recommend for or against treatment.

Q: Will orthodontic treatment hurt?

A: Over the years, orthodontic treatment has become less painful. Today's braces are built to minimize discomfort. While your teeth will usually be sore for a few days after braces are adjusted, the process isn’t generally painful. The pain you do experience can usually be relieved with over-the-counter pain relievers like Ibuprofen or Motrin.

Q: Is orthodontic treatment expensive?

A: If you begin treatment early on in life, it often is less costly than any dental care that would be needed to treat the more serious problems that could develop later in life.

Dr. Dworkin offers payment programs to help you finance your orthodontic treatment. Also, many insurance plans cover orthodontics.

Q: What is the cause of orthodontic problems?

A: Most of the time, orthodontic problems are genetic. Other causes include accidents, early or late loss of baby teeth, or sucking a thumb or fingers.

Q: Will I need to have any teeth removed?

A: While most patients undergo non-extraction therapy, in which teeth are moved into place, some patients need to have teeth removed, or “extracted,” to make room for other teeth. Dr. Dworkin makes every effort to avoid pulling teeth, but this may be necessary in some cases.

Q: Can I still have braces if I have missing teeth?

A: Yes. When teeth are missing, the teeth around the gap will move into the empty space, which may cause problems. Orthodontic treatment can correct and prevent these problems, and can also structure your teeth so that the missing ones can be replaced.

Sometimes, missing teeth can make treatment more difficult. Dr. Dworkin will work with you in these cases to get the best possible results.

Q: Will braces leave marks on my teeth?

A: Usually, only patients who don’t maintain proper oral hygiene practices during treatment have marks on their teeth after their braces are removed.

Q: Can you be too old for braces?

A: Today, many adults wear braces. Age is not a factor in deciding whether an adult patient needs braces.
